It has no formal meaning but it asks you ‘what do you think / what do you see / do you see the play on word / do you see the oblong rhythm / do you see the hidden politics / do you feel tongue-twisted / do you see the micro-meanings instead of ‘what is the true meaning of this?’ – Language’s seatbelt has become unfastened, landing face-down in earth where the tongue licks and sniffs at it in a playful manner – and then the owl comes!

FRIDAY January 29th: Leanne Bridgewater and James Byrne
James Byrne’s most recent poetry collections are White Coins and the newly published Everything Broken Up Dances. Blood/Sugar, was published by Arc Publications in 2009. Bones Will Crow: 15 Contemporary Burmese Poets, published in June 2012, is co-edited with ko ko thett and is the first anthology of Burmese poetry ever to be published in the West (Arc 2012). Byrne is the editor of The Wolf, which he co-founded in 2002. He is the co-editor of Voice Recognition: 21 Poets for the 21st Century, an anthology of poets under 35, published by Bloodaxe in 2009. Byrne lives in Liverpool and is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Edge Hill University. His poems have been translated into several languages including Arabic, Burmese and Chinese and he is the International Editor for Arc Publications.

Poetician and pattern artist, Leanne Bridgewater’s work stems from experimentation of word order and unconventional rhyme, to phonic chants and visual grafitti. Her drawings are said to belong to Pareidolia: seeing faces within patterns. Her performances and readings have included visual puns where a tomato is placed on a toe, musical instruments, collaborations with multiple language spreakers, traslators and musicians. She was awarded a Foyle Young poet at 17. At 23 she graduated from The University of Salford with an MA in Creative Writing: Innovation & Experiment (distinction). In 2015 she was shortlisted for the Melita Hume Poetry Prize.Her first debut collection, Confessions of a Cyclist, is out now and published by Knives Forks and Spoons Press. See here

How do you remember the people who are important to you? How do you conjure your shared past? Is it in an image, a sound, a smell, a touch? Or do you use words?

We invited world-leading poets and text-artists to make a language-memory for Tony Trehy, who has directed the internationally renowned Text Festival at Bury Art Museum since 2005. This exhibition celebrates a 10-year anniversary of the Festival and a 20-year anniversary of Tony’s time at Bury. Writing on a wall, an Internet search, a diary entry, a flurry of thoughts … what is remembering and who is it for?

Tony Trehy has been the ring-leader of decade-long conversations, new opportunities, challenges and heated debates. Each of his four Text Festivals has added to a continuing dialogue between language and art. Every Text Festival has asked the audience a simple-but-complex question: How do I read?

Into the historic space of Bury Art Museum, Trehy has injected text that is a new ‘language art’ for the 21st Century. Bury was once the centre of paper-making in Britain, now it is a pioneer of language-making, with its Text Archive welcoming readers from all over the world.

TOTAL RECALL is a guerrilla makeover, an A4 invasion of reading into the larger narrative of looking. Unlike the street signs outside, these are not corporate instructions or sales pitches; they are antidotes. Walls, vitrine, archival box—nary a “book” to be found, but a heap of language left in memory.

Bio.

Leanne Bridgewater is a poet who writes and draws, then draws upon subjects (mostly environmental). She enjoys indulging in language poetry and experimentation. Her latest works are Sentience: a three-thousand word sentence (Stoma Press), Three tales of Dysgeographia (self-published), The Homophone Translator: a project on homophonic translation (Beard of Bees, 2013) and an alternative series of greeting cards (zimZalla avant objects). She is currently working on a project involving random number generation, along with preparing a new collection of poetry.

“I realised I could use the sounds of a Polish man speaking to write poetry in English. This was the seed of the idea of The Homophone Translator. As a basis for the translation project, I wrote a short story, Silver Linear Cloud, in English. Then, I asked several competent translators to translate one or more of the nine sections of the story into other languages. I provided recordings of the English sections and they returned recordings of their language translation.

Once I received the foreign language translations, I “homophonically” translate the recorded words back into English. To do this, I listened to the sounds repeatedly until English words or sounds emerged I was interested in the process of constructing new poems, being inspired by sounds, rather than following the stereotypical path of seeing translation as an accurate transportation of meaning.”
