Edmund Hardy will read at the next Other Room on Wednesday 21st February at The Castle Hotel, Oldham St., Manchester. Here he is with Camilla Nelson at last year’s Museum of Futures exhibition opening. The other readers are Jazmine Linklater and Calum Gardner. 7 PM start, free, as always.
Edmund Hardy is a poet and polemicist. His book Complex Crosses (2014) is an experimental work of philology and philosophy. He’s currently working on a novel called Motley Apostles.

Three speakers will examine medical history and poetry, place and allegory. Tessa Whitehouse will focus on a literary exploration of the medical geography of Moorfields in East London into the 18th century; Fabian MacPherson will read poetry drawn from medical and scientific text and Edmund Hardy will speak on the relationship between alchemy, power and language.
Speakers:
Tessa Whitehouse is a lecturer in English at Queen Mary University of London. Her first book, The Textual Culture of English Protestant Dissent, 1720-1800 is contracted to Oxford University Press.
Fabian MacPherson is a poet based in London. His pamphlet ‘A Waspshire Lad’ was published by Crater Press (2012).
Edmund Hardy is a writer and publisher. His critical work on the history of poetry and dialectic Complex Crosses is forthcoming from Contraband Books. He co-edits the small press Capsule Editions who are dedicated to the essay form.

This essay reflects on how perceptions of time may be altered after the sudden death of a child, and why inhabiting this sharply new temporality stops one’s habitual modes of telling. Neither tearful memoir nor testament of hope, the essay charts a vivid experience of such a suspended time and discovers an unsuspected intimacy between time and language. Although a life inside this ‘arrested’ time resists being described, it is neither exceptional or pathological; to outlive one’s child is historically common enough. But, because of this felt suspension of the usual flow of time which enables narration, it leaves few literary traces.
Published by Capsule Editions as an 80-page pocket book, this is the first in a series of stand-alone literary essays by leading contemporary thinkers and writers.

About the Speakers
Carol Watts is Reader in Literature and Poetics, Birkbeck, University of London; Co-Director, Birkbeck Centre for Research in Contemporary Poetics. She has published a study of Dorothy Richardson (Northcote House, 1995) and The Cultural Work of Empire: The Seven Years War and the Imagining of the Shandean State (Edinburgh: EUP, 2007). Her poetry publications include Wrack (Reality Street, 2007), brass, running (Equipage, 2006), When blue light falls (Oystercatcher, 2008) and alphabetise (Intercapillary Editions, hardback edition 2011). She is currently researching the transatlantic culture of loyalism during the American Revolution.
Marianne Morris was raised in London. She studied English Literature at Cambridge, and was the recipient of the Harper-Wood Studentship for Creative Writing from St. John’s College in 2008. She is now researching for a PhD in contemporary poetry at Dartington (University College Falmouth). She founded Bad Press in 2002. Publications include: Commitment (Critical Documents, 2011); Tutu Muse (Fly By Night Press, 2008); A New Book From Barque Press, Which They Will Probably Not Print (Barque Press, 2006); with Bad Press: Cocteau Turquoise Turning, Fetish Poems (2004); Gathered Tongue, Memento Mori (2003); Poems in Order (2002).
