Chris McCabe: The Restructure

“THE RESTRUCTURE tells the story, through a series of poems, of the circumstances leading to the conception of a boy and his delivery into a difficult world. Born with a condition that requires long stretches in hospital the author attempts to view the world through the senses of the boy who is yet to learn language. This play of words presents the challenges of the world in a new light. The backdrop of the book is social unrest, but the author and boy – who has 40 different pseudonyms – push back against the monotone order of THE RESTRUCTURE (the all-controlling voice that appears throughout as a public service announcement) through the surreal inventions of words and games. This is a gripping book of contrasts, conjuring a life of extreme polarities that is always striving for a resolution, towards a restructured world.”

The Debris Field

14 Apr 19:30 Blue Room, The South Bank Centre, London. The Debris Field is a new multi-media production written and performed by poets Simon Barraclough, Isobel Dixon and Chris McCabe. The evocative poetic text is accompanied by original music from Oli Barrett of Bleeding Heart Narrative, and film by Jack Wake-Walker. The poets will take you on a resonant tour of the cultural debris of this iconic event, exploring ideas of luxury and labour; courage and folly; life and loss; and human ambition in the face of nature’s power. A key historic event explored with striking poetic, musical and visual impact.

Spanning centuries of changes across London’s Docklands, this multimedia ‘play of voices’ by poet Chris McCabe eavesdrops on a conversation between Echo, a middle-aged woman who has lived her life in the area, and Blaise, a northerner who finds resonances with the more familiar docks at Liverpool. Breaking into the dialogue, The Restructure is a sinister, all-knowing Public Service Announcement with ‘advice’ to share with anyone who’ll listen…

With accompanying tipsy folk melodies from Bleeding Heart Narrative’s Bartokian piano, strings, synths and sample set, and film from Jack Wake-Walker, Shad Thames, Broken Wharf resonates with what the docks might mean.

Shad Thames, Broken Wharf

From Chris McCabe:

“My play for voices has just been published by Penned in the Margins, it’s called Shad Thames, Broken Wharf and was performed at the London Word Festival in March this year. It’s a beautifully made mini-book of 48 pages that comes in a limited edition box (200 made) with a free-gift of an item from the Thames (fitting the theme of the play), including Victorian claypipes, pottery, a McDonalds toy, a champagne cork and what looks to me like a horse’s tooth. The play will be performed again at the Bluecoat in Liverpool on the 4th of December. More info and to buy on Penned site here: http://www.pennedinthemargins.co.uk/?p=954
