Sophie Mayer is the co-editor of Catechism: Poems for Pussy Riot (English PEN, 2012, with Markie Burnhope and Sarah Crewe) and Glitter is a Gender (Contraband, 2014, with Sarah Crewe). She has published poetry collections with Shearsman, Salt, Oystercatcher, Knives Forks and Spoons, and – most recently – (O) with Arc and kaolin, or How Does a Girl Like You Get to be a Girl Like You with Lark. She is currently a full-time feminist film activist. @tr0ublemayer.

Christine Kennedy is a Sheffield-based writer, artist and independent scholar who has published co-authored articles on women’s experimental poetry. Her own experimental poetry grew out of her fine art practice and has remained largely integral to it. Her poetry publications include ‘Hobby Horse: A Puppet Play for Cabaret Voltaire’ in Dadadollz (ISPress, 2010), Nineteen Nights in San Francisco (West House Books / The Cherry On The Top Press, 2007) and Possessions (The Cherry On The Top Press, 2003). The poetry sequence Twelve Entries from The Encyclopaedia of Natural Sexual Relations is published by The Cherry On The Top Press (2000/2003) including her short supporting essay. The White Lady’s Casket, her site-specific text installation for Bishops’ House and her supporting essay, are published in RSE 4packs No4: Renga + (Reality Street Editions, 2002). She is the co-author of Women’s Experimental Poetry in Britain 1970-2010: Body, Time and Locale (Liverpool University Press, 2013) which is the first full-length study of these poets. Emily Critchley is the author of several poetry collections (with Arehouse, Bad press, Dusie, Oystercatcher, Torque, Holdfire, Corrupt and Intercapillary presses) and a selected writing: Love / All That / & OK (Penned in the Margins, 2011). She has also published critical articles – on poetry, philosophy and feminism – and is the editor of Out of Everywhere 2: linguistically innovative poetry by women in north America & the UK (Reality Street, 2015). Critchley is Senior Lecturer in English and Creative Writing at the University of Greenwich, and lives in London with her partner and daughter.

Elizabeth-Jane Burnett is a poet, critic and curator. Poetry includes: Her Body: The City, Exotic Birds and oh-zones and has been anthologised in Dear World And Everyone In It: New Poetry in the UK (Bloodaxe). Criticism has appeared in journals such as the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry, Jacket, How2, Green Humanities. She has curated exhibitions with the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (CCANW) and is currently collaborating on a film on the poet John Clare. A collection on wild swimming and a monograph on the gift are forthcoming. She is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Newman University in Birmingham.

PhD opportunities at Salford

Once again, as part of the North West Consortium of universities (NWC), the University of Salford is keen to receive proposals for PhDs in a variety of Arts and Humanities subjects. If your proposal is accepted then you may be eligible for funding. We are initially looking for expressions of interest accompanied by a draft proposal by 3rd December 2015. If viable you will be asked to submit a formal proposal to Salford by the 22nd January and, if accepted at this stage, you’ll be asked to submit a funding proposal to the NWC by 12 February
Because of the nature of this email list, I would like to let you know that I am particularly interested in receiving proposals for PhDs in Creative Writing, with a focus on innovative poetic practice. I work in the context of the English Language, Literature and Creative Practice research group, which is also keen to receive proposals for PhDs in Literature across a range of areas.

Alan Halsey will be reading from his Versions of Martial, published earlier this year by Knives Forks & Spoons. His back catalogue includes The Text of Shelley’s Death (Five Seasons 1995), Marginalien (Five Seasons 2005) and Rampant Inertia (Shearsman 2015). Images he developed out of Dee & Kelley’s Enochian transcripts form the graphic component of Nigel Wood’s From the Diaries of John Dee, recently published by Apple Pie Editions. ‘Halsey’s publications bolt around the field like a deranged beagle’ (Ray Davis, Pseudopodium).
Tom Jenks’ latest collection is Spruce, published by Blart Books. Other works include Items, a 1000 fragment sequence published by if p then q, The Tome of Commencement, a spreadsheet translation of the Book of Genesis published by Stranger Press and 1000 Proverbs, a guide to modern life and manners with SJ Fowler, published by Knives Forks and Spoons. Geraldine Monk was first published in the 1970’s. Her poetry has appeared extensively in the U.K. and USA. Her latest book They Who Saw The Deep will be published next year in the USA by Free Verse Editions/Parlor Press. She is an affiliated poet to the Centre of Poetry and Poetics at the University of Sheffield.
Harriet Tarlo’s poetry publications include Love/Land (REM Press, 2003), Poems 1990-2003 (Shearsman Books, 2004), Poems 2004-2014 (Shearsman, 2015) Nab (Etruscan Books, 2005) and 2 artists books, Sound Unseen and behind land with Judith Tucker (Wild Pansy, 2013, 2015). Her academic essays on modernist and contemporary poetry appear in critical volumes published by Edinburgh University Press, Salt, Palgrave and Rodopi. Recent critical and creative work appears in Pilot, Jacket, Rampike, English Journal of Ecocriticism; Classical Receptions and Yellow Field. Exhibitions of texts, in collaboration with Jem Southam and Judith Tucker, have appeared at The Lowry, Salford, Tullie House, Carlisle; Musee de Moulages, Lyon and The University of Minneapolis. She edited a special feature on “Women and Eco-Poetics” for How2 Vol 3: No 2 and The Ground Aslant: An Anthology of Radical Landscape Poetry (Shearsman 2011). She is a Reader in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University
David Gaffney, Dan Berry, Sarah Lowes – The Three Rooms In Valerie’s Head
The Three Rooms In Valerie’s Head
The Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head by Dan Berry and David Gaffney is a Lakes International Comic Art Festival commission. Experimental and original, it’s a live performance of a graphic novel with projected images and specially commissioned music by acclaimed recording artist Sara Lowes. The piece explores relationships, memory, loneliness and obsession in a darkly humorous way, and will also be published in book form. Dan Berry is an illustrator, designer, cartoonist and lecturer.
The first performance is at 6 o’clock on Saturday 17th October at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, as part of the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival.

Over 5 sessions, 5 global avant-garde poetic movements will be used as references to springboard you into new writing techniques, stressing the possibility amidst the history. Covering five different movements of the post-war period, in five different nations, this course – with the energy, dynamism and invention of the writing it explores – will enrich anyone’s poetry horizons. Rhys Trimble residency and events at AiR Space/Craft Swansea
The launch of Rhys Trimble’s latest book Swansea Automatic, as he uses Bernadette Mayer’s writing experiments to take us on an experimental poetic exploration through Swansea.
“Pick a word or phrase at random, let mind play freely around it until a few ideas have come up, then seize on one and begin to write. Try this with a non-connotative word, like “so” etc” – Bernadette Mayer.
Swansea Automatic (Aquifer Press) is an experimental novel by poet Rhys Trimble. It celebrates Swansea through the creative writing advice of Bernadette Mayer – an author associated with the American l=a=n=g=u=a=g=e poets. In the novel Trimble attempts every one of nearly a hundred pieces of ‘advice’, the results of which are a cross between an epic poem, a surreal semi-autobiographical comic novel and a notebook exploring the springs of creativity.
To launch the book Rhys Trimble will be in residence at Swansea’s AiR art and craft space, there’ll be an evening launch event and creative workshop where those that attending can try out some of Mayer’s innovative ‘experiments in writing’ for themselves.
