Tony Lopez: Nevermore

Nevermore

zimZalla object 023 is Nevermore, by Tony Lopez: silkscreen printed folding card, letterpress sleeve with rubber stamp. 44.6 x 9 cms (unfolded). Hand-printed sans serif letterforms are arranged in threes, located on each plane of the folding card. The text is a variation on Robert Creeley’s statement that ‘form is never more than an extension of content.’ This is a limited edition of 40. More details at the zimZalla site.

zimZalla object 017: Pomegranates in the Oak

zimZalla object 017 is Pomegranates in the Oak, a sound collage CD with discovered and manipulated text by Alison Gibb and text and sound treatments by Tom Jenks.

The object’s primary text is Virginia Andrews’ 1979 novel Flowers in the Attic, from which Gibb, using instinctive selection and placement, has created a second text. This second text was then replicated sonically using spoken recordings by Gibb of the relevant sections of the original novel, with selected words and phrases isolated and spliced in order, preserving uneven and disjunctive patterns of tone and stress. This sonic collage was then fed through speech to text software to create a third, shadow text, which was recorded and added as a layer to the first track. Finally, a selection of samples, suggested by the hybrid text, were added, with some distortion. More at the zimZalla site.

zimZalla 016: Female Versions of Christ by j/j hastain

Nine texts accompanied by eight illuminations. The texts, printed on high quality textured card, are discrete but kindred blocks, obliquely referenced and counterpointed by the illuminations, which are full colour collages, printed on transparencies. The texts and illuminations are in labelled envelopes, with these envelopes in turn housed inside a full colour outer envelope. More information, including how to buy, can be found at the zimZalla site.

Contemporary Poetry and Source Conference

18th May 2012 – 20th May 2012 at Plymouth University.

“This conference aims to explore the use of source material in contemporary poetry. The term ‘source’ should be given a wide remit, incorporating ‘origin’, ‘subject’ and ‘method’. Contemporary poetry, here, refers to writers working post – 1950, but of course thier sources may well be historical. We invite single author studies as well as papers which speak to the sources which are defining our poetic zeitgeist; we also invite creative practitioners to explore their own sources with a framework or context. Some topics for panels include: visual arts, music, nature, the personal, the impersonal, found material, the documentary, the trans-Atlantic exchange, influence, language, literature, biography, history, politics, philosophy and translations. Papers on or inspired by the work of our plenary speakers are very welcome.”

Includes a paper by Mark Leahy on Opposable Dumbs by Other Room reader Tina Darragh. You can watch part one of Tina’s reading below and find the other parts here.
