This evening raises its glass to Dick Higgins who said: ‘The idea has arisen, as if by spontaneous combustion throughout the entire world, that these points are arbitrary and only useful as critical tools, in saying that such-and-such a work is basically musical, but also poetry. This is the intermedial approach, to emphasize the dialectic between the media… As with the cubists, we are asking for a new way of looking at things. We do not ask any more to speak magnificently of taking arms against a sea of troubles, we want to see it done.’

Technology isn’t just changing the way poetry is produced and disseminated, and it isn’t just creating new media forms for poets to colonise. It’s also creating a context in which many techniques characteristic of experimental poetic practice have become commonplace. Join us as Syndicate curates a series of live performances, installations and dialogues at the raw intersection of avant-garde poetics, technology and cyberculture.

WHO::

Sandra Alland is a writer, filmmaker, interdisciplinary artist and performer. She has published and presented her work throughout the UK, Europe, the US and Canada. In 2009, Edinburgh’s Forest Publications published Sandra’s chapbook of short fiction, Here’s To Wang, which went into its second printing in 2010. Sandra has published three books of poetry: Naturally Speaking (Toronto: espresso, 2012); Blissful Times (Toronto: BookThug, 2007); and Proof of a Tongue (Toronto: McGilligan, 2004). Sandra curates Cachín Cachán Cachunga Queer & Trans* Cabaret in Edinburgh, and was recently guest editor at Jacket2 for a special issue on Scottish poets. http://www.blissfultimes.ca.

Steve Willey lives in Whitechapel, London. His poetry has been widely anthologized including in: Dear World and Everyone In It (Bloodaxe, 2013); Better Than Language (Ganzfeld press, 2011); and City State (Penned In The Margins, 2009). His long-form poem Elegy (his debut collection) was published by Veer Books in July 2013, but you can’t get it yet. Steve enjoys working collaboratively and across different media, and in the past he has worked with the composer Edward Nesbit and the post-rock band Rumour Cubes on pieces that have been performed at the Wigmore Hall and at Glastonbury Music Festival respectively. Steve’s current poetic projects derive from a trip he took to Aida Refugee Camp in 2009, and a further visit in August 2013. He holds a PhD on the subject of Bob Cobbing 1950-1978: Poetry, Performance and the Institution, from Queen Mary, University of London. Ian Davidson’s latest poetry collection, Partly in Riga (Shearsman 2010) was mostly written while on a residency in Latvia. His current project explores the ways that practices and ideas of movement and mobility, particularly those of humans, relate to contemporary writing. He has made extensive use of a seven syllable line, a quantity that always seems incomplete, and see the pamphlet Into Thick Hair (Wild Honey 2011) for an example. Other poetry collections include Harsh (Spectacular Diseases 2003), As if Only (Shearsman 2007) and At a Stretch (Shearsman 2004), and critical books include Ideas of Space in Contemporary Poetry (Palgrave 2007) and Radical Spaces of Poetry (Palgrave 2010).

Expect:: Innovative poetics, multi-media artworks, interactive performances, lively debate and sparkling wine.

Syndicate hopes you’ll join us on 21st May for multimedia poetry, electronic music, zesty discussion over carbonated drinks and performances from Pierre Joris, Nicole Peyrafitte, Samantha Walton and Sean Williams under the theme: SWARM.

Pierre Joris has moved between the US, Great Britain, North Africa, France & Luxembourg for 50 years, publishing some 50 books of poetry, essays & translations. Recent publications include Meditations on the Stations of Mansur al-Hallaj (Chax Press, 2012) and Diwan Ifrikiya: The University of California Book of North African Literature (Volume 4 in the Poems for the Millennium series), co-edited with Habib Tengour. Forthcoming are Barzakh (Poems 2000-2012) from Black Widow Press, & The Collected Late Poems of Paul Celan, translated & annotated by Joris, from Farrar, Strauss & Giroux. Nicole Peyrafitte, is a Gasco-Rican pluridisciplinary artist born and raised in the Gascon-French Pyrenees. Her eclectic background & her experiences in shaping identity across two continents & four languages informs her multifaceted works. Peyrafitte’s texts, voice, paintings,videos, & cooking were displays in, among others: Ninon; The Bi-Continental Chowder/La Garbure Transcontinentale; Whisk Don’t Churn. Her latest projects are “Basil King: MIRAGE,” a 2012 film she co-directed with Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, & “Bi-Valve: Vulvic
Spave/Vulvic Knowledge,” a series paintings, bi-lingual texts & performance (Stockport Flats, 2013). DOMOPOETICS: Personal & Shared Artistic Practices

Domopoetics is a performance that meanders dialogically between Pierre Joris’ poems, translations & thinking, & Nicole Peyrafitte’s drawings & videos, voice- & textual work.

Joris’ nomadic writerly processes & their insistence on a “barzakh” — a navigable archipelago of “in-betweens” — & Peyrafitte’s concept of “Vulvic space” — a homeomorphic topology or transformable conceptual space enhancing the exchanges between self & other(s) — come together in what can be called a “diastolic flux.” Theoretically describable as moving between a somewhat Deleuzian energy of plateaus & stages & a more Irigaray-ian awareness based on difference and infiltration, while always anchored in a processual practical poetics & art making, the couple’s collaboration started in the early 90s, & includes a range of duo multimedia performances, many book covers & illustrations, & the raising of two sons.

Samantha Walton is a poet and one third of Syndicate. Her recent project comes out of a creative residency at the ESRC Genomics Forum working on the relationship between lyric poetry and the life sciences and co-generating TTAGGG – an open source poetry sequence – with the help of social science researchers.

Sean Williams is a sound designer, recordist, and electronic and electroacoustic music composer and performer. He is currently a Leverhulme scholar at the Reid School of Music in Edinburgh, documenting historic electronic music performance practice.

The first installment of new media poetry night Syndicate explores the meaning of authorship and identity in a digital context in an evening of poetry readings, music, discussions and web-art screenings.

Sophie Robinson is a London-based poet who is currently working on a long poem about Soviet space travel. She’s interested in the experimental sonnet, contemporary revisions of lyric, and queer space and time. Sophie was Poet in Residence at the V&A in 2011.

Calum Rodger is a Glasgow-based poet with an interest in digital poetics. Tonight, he’ll share works made using Chris Westbury’s ‘user-configurable dynamic textual projective surface’ JanusNode, and wrestle with their critical and theoretical contexts.

Dorothy Butchard is a researcher at the University of Edinburgh who is exploring the ramifications of new media for established narrative techniques and the representation of marginal communities in literary space. She’ll be curating two pieces of digital art and sharing ideas from her research.

Syndicate will close with Edinburgh poet and musician Illiop, whose electronic music is often reminiscent of the call of the Namaqua rainfrog, and/or the sound of a hundred ribbons tied to industrial machines: tonight it will be reminiscent of the voices we’ve just heard. Syndicate brings together writers, musicians, artists and researchers working in and in response to digital technologies, new media and evolving network practices. It is organised by Lila Matsumoto, Jo L Walton and Samantha Walton, in collaboration with Inspace.
