Myths of the Modern Woman

Myths of the Modern Woman – an afternoon of readings and discussion curated by Sandeep Parmar, academic, poet and author of The Reading Mina Loy’s Autobiographies: Myth of the Modern Woman. The event features contributions from poets Zoe Skoulding, Sara Crangle, Joanne Ashcroft, Robert Sheppard and artist Melissa Gordon.

Parmar has programmed Myths of the Modern Women in response to Loy’s writing and to Melissa Gordon’s enduring fascination with Loy’s play ‘Collision’ (1916). Gordon’s exhibition Fallible Space, an installation determined by the script of ‘Collision’ provides the backdrop for the afternoon. The event will be introduced by Sandeep Parmar followed by poetry readings by Skoulding, Crangle, Ashcroft and Sheppard. The readings will be followed by a round table discussion and drinks in the Bluecoat bar.

Mina Loy (1882-1966) is recognised today as one of the most innovative modernist poets, numbering Gertrude Stein, Marcel Duchamp, Djuna Barnes and T.S. Eliot amongst her admirers.

About the Poets:

Robert Sheppard’s History or Sleep: Selected Poems has just been published by Shearsman, and showpieces work from the last 30 years. Last year he also published his ‘autrebiographies’ Words Out of Time and this yearThe Drop will appear from Oystercatcher. He is Professor of Poetry and Poetics at Edge Hill University, and is also a critic of contemporary poetry.

Sara Crangle is a Reader in English at the University of Sussex. She edited Mina Loy’s unpublished short prose works for a volume titled Stories and Essays of Mina Loy (Dalkey Archive Press 2010). She has published writing on Loy’s associates Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis and members of Dada, and is currently working on a book with the working title, Mina Loy: Anatomy of a Sentient Satirist (forthcoming, Edinburgh University Press). She started her first book of poetry, Wild Ascending Lisp (Critical Documents 2008), whilst on a research trip to explore the Loy archive at Yale.

Zoë Skoulding is primarily a poet, though her work encompasses sound-based vocal performance, collaboration, translation, literary criticism, editing, and teaching creative writing. She lectures in the School of English at Bangor University, and has been Editor of the international quarterly Poetry Wales since 2008. Her recent collections of poems are The Museum of Disappearing Sounds (Seren, 2013), Remains of a Future City (Seren, 2008), long-listed for Wales Book of the Year 2009, and The Mirror Trade (Seren, 2004). Her collaborative publications include Dark Wires with Ian Davidson (West House Books, 2007) and From Here, with Simonetta Moro (Dusie, 2008). She is a member of the collective Parking Non-Stop, whose CD Species Corridor, combining experimental soundscape with poetry and song, was released on the German label Klangbad in 2008. You Will Live in Your Own Cathedral is a multimedia soundscape, video and poetry performance with Alan Holmes that has been presented across Europe in several languages.

Joanne Ashcroft has had poems published in journals, pamphlets, and in The Other Room anthology 2015. Her pamphlet Maps and Love Songs for Mina Loy won the Poetry Wales Purple Moose 2012 and is published by Seren. Most recently she has a collaborative work with Patricia Farrell, Conversational Nuisance available as a zimZalla object. Several of her ‘Charm’ poems can be read in the current edition of The Wolf and in Litter (online). Joanne is currently a research student at Edge Hill University, studying ‘sound and transformation’ in the work of three contemporary innovative poets.

 Sandeep Parmar was born in Nottingham in 1979 and was raised in Southern California. She received her PhD in English Literature from University College London in 2008 on the unpublished autobiographies of the modernist poet Mina Loy. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. She is the Reviews Editor of The Wolf magazine and edited The Collected Poems of Hope Mirrlees for Carcanet Press (2011). Her critical book on Loy, Reading Mina Loy’s Autobiographies, appeared from Bloomsbury in 2013. She teaches twentieth-century literature and creative writing at the University of Liverpool. Her books are Eidolon and The Marble Orchard, both from Shearsman.

Robert Sheppard is launching two books tonight, his new History or Sleep: Selected Poems, which covers the full range of his work since 1982, and his autrebiographies, Words Out of Time. He lives in Liverpool, is one of the organisers of Storm and Golden Sky, and is also a literary critic of work generally known as ‘linguistically innovative’. He teaches at Edge Hill University.

‘Patricia Farrell is a poet and visual artist. She co-organised the SubVoicive reading series in the early 80s and was a member of the arts group New River Project.  She has collaborated with other writers, artists and musicians on a range of projects and publications: most notably the poets Robert Sheppard and Joanne Ashcroft, the jeweller and installation artist Jivan Astfalck, on the project B*twixst, and Jennifer Cobbing on the dance piece, A Space Completely Filled with Matter (recently published by Veer Publications as a visual text sequence).  Her work is published in magazines and collections, as well as individual pamphlets: most recently, Seven Bays of Spirituality (Knives Forks and Spoons Press). She completed a PhD thesis in 2011 on poetic artifice in philosophical writing. Her collection, The Zechstein Sea, was published by Shearsman Books in 2013.’

Robert Sheppard has just published Words Out of Time from KFS, his ‘autrebiographies’ and ‘unwritings’. Veer is soon to publish Unfinish, a book of varied prose pieces. And slightly later in the year, Shearsman will publish a Selected Poems of over 30 years of work. Former works include Twentieth Century Blues and Warrant Error, and he is curretly writing more ‘fictional poems’ in collaboration with other poets, in the mode of his 2013 Shearsman book, A Translated Man. Living in Liverpool, he is Professor of Poetry and Poetics at Edge Hill University and co-runs the Storm and Golden Sky reading series.

Michael Zand is a writer, editor and researcher. He was born in Iran, but has spent most of his life in London, where he is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Roehampton. His research interests lie in alternative translations of Middle Eastern poetry, the use of psycho-geography in contemporary literature, and modern readings of the medieval notion of the “Ashik” or wandering poet. His collections include Kval (Arthur Shilling, 2009) and Lion: The Iran Poems (Shearsman, 2010). He was included in the Best Poetry of 2011anthology (Salt, 2011) and won the Roehampton Poetry Performance Prize in 2008. His  collection The Wire and Other Poems was published by Shearsman Books in 2012. Michael has participated in various collaborations with musicians and multi-media artists and read at a wide range of poetry events across Europe. Other projects include an international translation project called Lexico and a contemporary translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam entitled Ruby. In February 2013 his sequence of poems entitled “Pang” was included in an exhibition on “Poets of the Thames” at the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading, Berkshire.

Robert Sheppard: Words Out of Time

Words Out of Time deforms and reforms a story of Sheppard’s life as an othering, an ‘autrebiography’, in modes that include what he calls ‘unwriting’, working through and transforming diaries and journals. The Given tells it in four different ways, from a litany of what hasn’t been remembered, to an alphabetical disfigurement of its features. Arrival invents a demonic sibling, generated from the diaries, restlessly inhabiting lyrics, a short story, an essay and footnotes. In When Sheppard goes conceptual with ‘With’, while ‘Words’ weaves abandoned (found) texts to shake up this history; ‘Work’ distends temporality, reverses standard autobiography’s fascination with origins, slows down time to show how work works its way into a life. ABOUT THE ANTHOLOGY
This anthology came out a shared enthusiasm for and addiction to music, along with a certain middle-aged nostalgia which emerged as the result of failing to be moved by so much of the music we have greedily devoured over the last few years, and thankfully being intensely moved by some. Music can excite, delight, goad, amuse or bore the listener – it also has the capacity to lodge itself in your brain and be heard in the imagination at the strangest times.This anthology is about that, about spiralling back into memories, about yesterday’s music today: music that has lodged itself in these poets’ hearts and souls, and which never fails to move them when recalled or listened to anew.

It has to be said, we didn’t get the work we expected when we sent out our call for submission. Whilst we share a taste for 70s rock and have differing individual tastes that lean more towards blues and west coast rock or free jazz and post-punk respectively, our contributors here are moved by different things. A collaboration, originally written for Steve Fowler’s Camarade event in London  by exiled Liverpudlian Hampson and domiciled Liverpolitan Sheppard. They decided to take on the city, but like so many, were left haunted by its history and its pubs. An adjunct to Hampson’s famous Seaport and to other explorations by Sheppard in his recent work concerning the city, this pamphlet is the real thing: Arthur Dooley and Ray Charles rub shoulders in a Ginnassium and The Grapes with Marc Chagall and Kevin Ayres.

Ian Seed teaches Creative Writing at the University of Chester. He has lived and worked in different countries, including Italy, France and Poland. His poetry, prose poetry, fiction, reviews and translations have appeared in such journals as Blackbox Manifold, Free Verse, Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine, The North, PN Review, Poetry Salzburg Review, Poetry Wales, Shearsman, Stride and Tears in the Fence. Seed’s first full-length collection, Anonymous Intruder, was published by Shearsman in 2009.
