“My girlfriend told me she worked in an office where someone would fly a remote controlled helicopter about and someone else would play a trumpet. That went into a story and my girlfriend now says I stole it from her. ‘You’ve stolen my ideas’, she says. But I didn’t, I just stole her experiences, which I think is all right.”

Liverpool Hugs and Kisses
A collaboration, originally written for Steve Fowler’s Camarade event in London by exiled Liverpudlian Hampson and domiciled Liverpolitan Sheppard. They decided to take on the city, but like so many, were left haunted by its history and its pubs. An adjunct to Hampson’s famous Seaport and to other explorations by Sheppard in his recent work concerning the city, this pamphlet is the real thing: Arthur Dooley and Ray Charles rub shoulders in a Ginnassium and The Grapes with Marc Chagall and Kevin Ayres.

Ian Seed teaches Creative Writing at the University of Chester. He has lived and worked in different countries, including Italy, France and Poland. His poetry, prose poetry, fiction, reviews and translations have appeared in such journals as Blackbox Manifold, Free Verse, Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine, The North, PN Review, Poetry Salzburg Review, Poetry Wales, Shearsman, Stride and Tears in the Fence. Seed’s first full-length collection, Anonymous Intruder, was published by Shearsman in 2009. Shearsman have also published his collections Shifting Registers (2011) and Makers of Empty Dreams (2014).

Claire Trévien is an Anglo-Breton poet, editor, reviewer, workshop leader and live literature producer.
She is the author of the pamphlet Low-Tide Lottery (Salt, 2011), and The Shipwrecked House (Penned in the Margins, 2013), which was longlisted in the Guardian First Book Award. The Shipwrecked House was co-commissioned as a one-woman show by Ledbury Festival and supported thanks to Arts Council Funding. It has been touring the UK this autumn, reviews can be found here.
Her poetry has appeared in numerous publications including POETRY, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Magma, Under the Radar, Poetry Salzburg, The Forward Book of Poetry 2014 and Best British Poetry 2012.
She edits Sabotage Reviews, co-edits Verse Kraken, and co-organizes Penning Perfumes.
Luke Kennard is a poet and writer of fiction. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Exeter and lectures in creative writing at the University of Birmingham. He won an Eric Gregory award in 2005 for his first collection of prose poems The Solex Brothers (Stride Books) which has since been re-issued by Salt as The Solex Brothers Redux. His second collection of poetry The Harbour Beyond the Movie was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2007 making him the youngest poet ever to be nominated for the award. His third book, The Migraine Hotel, was published in by Salt in 2009 and a pamphlet, Planet-Shaped Horse, was published by Nine Arches Press in 2011 to critical acclaim.
Matt Dalby’s big M60 walk
Matt Dalby is walking around the entire M60 motorway in May and making art on the way, as part of his Islands project, which he describes as follows: “Islands is a series of artworks planned for 2015, beginning with a series of soundworks called Islands : Wind. My walk around the M60, and the period of preparation leading up to it, will lead to the creation of a set of linked works called Islands: Manchester. Islands : Manchester will exist across different media such as text, video, sound and installation works.”

The last decade has witnessed a turn to considering the legacies of modernism prevalent and operative within contemporary literature and culture. Within the scholarly discourses surrounding this shift, there has been little discussion of the status of the small press in the twenty-first century, and its vital role in the dissemination of avant-garde writing. This symposium seeks to address the role and status of the small press in the UK as a field of academic enquiry. We aim to offer a forum that will bring together a number of small presses, and facilitate productive dialogue between the diverse publishers working with contemporary innovative writers and poets.
The day symposium consists of three panels of scholars, publishers, writers, and poets, which will explore the history of the small press, literary politics and the relationship between the small press and the mainstream, and take up issues surrounding materialities of the text and small press publishing. The Contemporary Small Press Book Fair following the symposium will showcase and market the rich and varied work currently being published by small presses.
Poets and writers reading from their work throughout the day, and into the evening, include Carol Watts, Peter Hughes, Toby Litt, Robert Hampson, Jennifer Cooke, Nicholas Royle, Amy Cutler, Rod Mengham, Tony White, and Michael Nath.
Participating presses include Oystercatcher Press, Reality Street, Route, Veer Books, Comma Press, and Equipage.
A collection of new writing by writers and poets taking part in the symposium, outLINES: from the Small Press, published in collaboration with Oystercatcher Press, will be available on the day.
