Centrifugal – contemporary poetry from Dublin & Guadalajara
7 poets from Dublin and 7 from Guadalajara exchange selections of their work in pairs and render the work of their partner poet in the opposite language. The emphasis is on re-interpretation rather than traditional translation: the poems become new in the hands of the partner poet while bearing the poetic core of the original.
Centrifugal investigates the multiple possibilities of meaning released through the transfer of texts between languages. The poets’ responses range from rewrites to deliberate mistranslations to dialogues with the originals to entirely new poems. Some make use of a near native-level knowledge of the opposite language, and some require literal translations of the source texts; others resort to dictionaries, web searches or Google Translate.
The writing presented in Centrifugal “strays from the centre, away from the main stream of how poetry and translation are expected to behave”. In addition to providing a record of the work of some of the outstanding poets currently writing in the two cities, this book stands as a significant contribution to the exploration of the relationships between language, geography, identity and poetry.

ABOUT THE BOOK
In his most daring collection to date, Chris McCabe delves into the shadowy recesses of London history, bringing forth unsettling anachronisms and revealing the city as a perilous place to exist.
Taking its name from the term for a female spy, Speculatrix is at once the voyeur and the observed. Fame and death are McCabe’s subjects, sifted and strained through his poems’ urgent rhythms. At the heart of the book, a sequence of wild, neurotic sonnets tears at the corpus of Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre to conjure a visceral landscape of decay and financial collapse. Extending the collection beyond his trademark urban locale are startling poems for the loved and departed: from the artist Francis Bacon to the poets Arthur Rimbaud and Barry MacSweeney. In Speculatrix McCabe has pulled out all the stops, showing why he is considered one of British poetry’s most exciting and pioneering spirits.

About the book
A version of Encyclops. was handwritten on 142 paper bags with photographs and drawings. This work was exhibited at news of the world gallery, Deptford, London, November-December 2013. In this print version published by if p then q writing (encyclopedic bugs) is presented alphabetically. There is a sense of the style of Gertrude Stein of Tender Buttons & eroticism, perhaps a theme yet also a method used to intuit. Images and ideas are immediately in view then drift out again, just as fast, leaving the reader to return to the poem without knowing whether the experience is being repeated. It’s good good stuff.
